Online advertisements often disrupt user experience by cluttering web pages, slowing load times, and compromising privacy through tracking. Existing ad blockers can be inefficient, resource-heavy, or lack customisation. Users need a lightweight and effective solution for an ad-free browsing experience. This project aims to create a user-friendly ad blocker to seamlessly block intrusive ads on websites.
I created this project for the Dark Pattern Hackbuster hackathon, a platform dedicated to fostering innovative and efficient solutions for developing fair, ethical, and transparent websites. The hackathon aimed to address the growing concern over dark patterns—manipulative design practices that intentionally deceive or coerce users into actions they may not fully understand or want to take, such as unintentional subscriptions, hidden fees, or invasive data collection. Recognizing the harm these practices cause to user trust and experience, my project focused on eliminating these deceptive elements to ensure users interact with websites that prioritize honesty, transparency, and user rights.
The project utilized advanced detection techniques to identify and disable dark patterns, ensuring that users are not misled or manipulated. Additionally, it introduced design principles and features to create a seamless, intuitive, and user-friendly interface that promotes ease of use and builds trust. By prioritizing ethical web design, the project empowers users to make informed decisions while navigating websites, ultimately fostering a digital ecosystem that values integrity and fairness.
This initiative not only highlights the critical role of user empowerment in the digital age but also showcases the potential of technology to transform the online experience into one that is more equitable and transparent. Through this project, I aimed to demonstrate how developers can address the ethical challenges in web design while creating value for both users and website creators.
